VOLUNTEER CONSULTANT

Nick Jordan

“Huge rewards for just sharing skills”

Nick is an engineer by training, worked in banking and was sponsored by his employer to do an Executive MBA at London Business School. Subsequently he joined an e-commerce start-up and then moved into consultancy. He re-joined banking after 10 years as a private banker before starting his own company in 2013. Nick has expertise in business planning, start-ups, financial management, and funding. Nick worked with Judith Tusiimemugabe and Williams Kizito who live in Kampala Uganda who run a peanut butter manufacturing company called Mr Pnut.

“I grew up in Africa and this was a chance to give something back in an organisation that aligns with my philosophy on the type of help Africa needs.”

“During my first phone call we all felt slightly reserved. I broke the ice with stories of growing up in Kenya and Tanzania. I started off with questioning initially and introduced some simple financial planning tools later. After each call I produced a summary of what was discussed and an action item list. We wanted to focus on increasing profitable sales through increasing product quality and differentiating from the rest of the market through providing a better quality peanut butter. I even got my wife involved looking at peanut butter in the UK. The entrepreneur knew their business well and having grown up in Africa I didn’t find not being there an issue. What helped them was some objective critique and guidance.”

“The hardest thing about the project was time. Some of what was needed could not happen from one week to the next. There were also a few times when we fell into 'radio silence' due to family or other matters. We managed to get their improved product into the largest supermarket in Kampala. The initial batch sold out quickly, with no returns and a follow-up order was placed.”

“Personally I had a huge sense of satisfaction working with Williams, he had an incredible drive and passion for his business”.

What would you say to other volunteers thinking about joining Grow Movement?

“It is a hugely rewarding experience and the impact you have on the clients, and their thanks, is immense.”
