If funding could be found to be able to access Skype for periodic interactions during the course of a Grow project, that would be very beneficial.
The ability for Grow Businesses to speak with one another from time to time about their projects would be helpful for them to make the most of their projects. This is also true for the Grow Business consultants, whose chance to speak with another consultant once or twice during the course of the project might well make for a more productive project.

Consider grouping consultants by skill-set. One of the items the business owner wanted assistance with was in fund-raising in Uganda, which I had limited personal experience with, it may be beneficial to have consultants that can help with specialist areas as the business goes through its life cycle. Therefore consultants would rotate through projects providing specific assistance on specialist areas. |

I was very pleased with my experience with my GROW business and with our GROW manager who stayed on top of us to keep us on track. I imagine each assignment is unique, but from my point of view, I can't think how it might have been any better. |

Excellent work by Grow! I think Grow should publish volunteer opportunities on United Nations Online Volunteering website, that way group will get better coverage and plentiful volunteers. |

As mentioned above, I found the 12 week timetable (which we did not manage to stick to) a bit regimented. Beyond that, I think the Grow Movement is a fantastic scheme which can clearly make a big difference to small businesses in Africa. |

The Grow Scheme is a very important tool that should be used by all growing Institutions. The mentoring therein helps the business owners and managers obtain spot answers and solutions to problems and challenges facing the company. The fact that it is done very fast, gives the company more time to improve and therefore grow. |

The Grow Scheme could set up a postbox at the Grow office where Grow Consultants and Grow businesses can exchange paper articles, DVDs and other items of interest. Grow businesses can then pick up these items from the Grow office.
The Grow Scheme could also set up an internet Skype connection at their office for use by Grow businesses if they reside in the same city / area. |

There should be field visits by the Grow Consultant to assess the progress of the grow business. |

The Grow scheme is a great idea, which really helps real businesses that do not otherwise have access to rigorous business consulting from experienced professionals. I would recommend that the scheme aims for paced expansion into other countries in which it can help real businesses to success, and perhaps ties up with other schemes in different industries (e.g healthcare?) |

Scale up its efforts,there are many people who open shop with out much clarity and end up closing in 2years. It does yield results especially with regard to our situation when we engaged with it.Its simple,interactive,gives real time value and results. |

YES, the Grow Project set actually set its establishment offices in various regions of operation say in Uganda (Kampala, mbarara) and also call upon its members to visit their offices for purposes of consultations/clarifications other than dwelling much on phone calls which do not cater for the information needed in advance.
also, the Grow consultants should be encouraged to meet their clients in a while so as to make a follow up on their recommendations. this can enable the Grow businesses to thrive. |

Owing to the detailed information i required the process took much longer.
Each consultant should be vetted better to ensure they are able to commit and are aware of the time requirements. |

Different businesses will require different time frames, therefore time and ammount of sessions should be flexible depanding on complexity of discussed issues. One business will need very few sessions while another might need ongoing help. The ammount of sessions should be defined after consultant has a chance to know the business better. There is no point to restrain sessions to few if the ojectives are not going to be met within two months and to be obliged to continue, when all matters have been already resolved. |

More guidance to consultants as to how to structure sessions
More background upfront (an initial report with pictures of the business, business owner etc) for consultants before the project starts so that they have a better sense of the business and it helps to better build the relationship)
More clarity as to how follow up after the 12 sessions should be handled. |

Unfortunately though Grow Volunteer Consulting cannot provide businesses with any finance ourselves as that would create a conflict of interest for us. i am strongly in support of the idea of the consultants coming over. i remember suggesting a gain some thing like that some time, but considering the cost involved and the very fact that this is a pilot project, i still think your current efforts are yeilding positive fruits. probably it will be some time in the near future after GROW has fully established its self, thats when you can go a head to pay visits. otherwise as aperson i still feel that you guys are very effective.
if Grow could work towards availing its clients with some little amounts of money as a start up capital and nurture them in to seeing it grow and expand, it would even motivate it,s clients more. because the big question always is "they are telling us to start small and grow big, but where do we get that small start from?" |

It would be helpful to have the businesses developed to a certain level before involving Grow Consultants. This could be achieved through better utilisation of the Enterprise Uganda and BUDS resources (admin: local partner organizations in Uganda). Once the businesses had achieved a certain predetermined level of sophistication and implemented certain procedures then the Grow Consultants may be more effectively used.
For example Enterprise Uganda and BUDS could help with:
- bank accounts and very general overview of financing options
- company and business name registration
- accounting procedures
- preliminary corporate legal matters, etc.
Grow Consultants could then be used more effectively for advice relating to:
- product and market segmentation
- marketing and go to market strategy
- advertising options
- detailed financing options including development of financial projections
- HR policy, recruitment strategy and remuneration options |

I would recommend grow to assist other small businesses to grow as well.
Given that the services offered by Grow are free to the businesses then It is absolutely right to be a little bite restrict with the performance of the businesses, And to the consultants not to let down their businesses they chose to assist. |

I absolutely agree with you (admin: recommending that consultants should not travel to Uganda), traveling to Uganda will increase the costs. What about getting some Ugandan consultants or Ugandans who can work with the consultants to closely monitor our business? this may as well reduce on the connectivity problem as some of the business men / women will be able to communicate through such people. |

-Scheme is much more effective when business owners are also able to use email.
-Consultants need to be patient at the outset of the scheme. It seems that often business owners appreciate the value of Grow much more after 4-5 sessions. Then often they start to make changes to address connectivity issues (e.g. getting better SIM cards for their phones or making more effort to be on time for calls). Consequently consultants have to realise that they need to invest time in convincing the business owner of the value of their advice. |

My suggestion is the consultants have to be more patient with the busines persons and scheduling should be of shorter times at the beginning but more frequent say two times a week for not more than 30 minutes at time.
The consultants should not travel to uganda but instead continue to work with organisations that are in touch with the traders and manufacturers.
The programme is more suitable for the medium manufacturing company as compared to the general traders |
