From my perspective, the key challenge we had related to communcation. Certainly at first it was difficult to communicate effectively over the telephone. With email, this became more productive. With the ability to speak with and see one another using Skype, communication improved a great deal. It would be terrific if Skype conferences could be used several times during the course of the project. Another challenge lay in the unconscious assumptions we make about the way in which things are done. It wasn't until we went into a lot of detail about how the Grow Business did specific things that we were able to identify a simple but very effective way in which a key cost driver for the Grow Business could be reduced. Another challenge had to do with the high level of technical detail associated with the Grow Business's work. It was helpful to both me as the consultant and the Grow Business that I recruited a friend with extensive technical expertise in the Grow Business's sector to join us in several conversations.

The main challenges faced were obtaining clear phone connections, regular internet access from within Uganda and fitting the meeting times in with my ever moving work schedule here in the UK. None of these pose a major obstacle though and with a bit of planning and patience they can all be easily overcome.

"- Communication via telephone was often difficult, to understand each other partcularly when signals wer enot great. Communication via skype / video call would have been easier. - Ensuring business owner kept to session times. - Managing business owner expectations of identifying a single goal for the sessions, he had a tendency to expect some very large goals, and ensuring he focused on just one and remained interested was a challenge. - Juggling time commitments - I probably spent more than 1hr a week, but found towards the end this was a personal challenge that was very difficult."

Our challenges revolved around the basic dilemmas of time and culture. 1. The first challenge was simply finding the time to regularly connect that was compatible with our 7 hour time difference. 2. Our phone connection was not always clear and reliable. We had less trouble understanding one another than I had feared, but often the poor connection would make it hard to catch everything said. 3. There were local challenges I didn't understand at first or couldn't figure a way around - for example: dedicated internet connectivity, lack of access to web-based services including credit card or other payment forms.I might have preferred more written communication, but I don't think that necessarily suited my GROW business especially based on limited internet access.

The business owner and I were busy so we were unable to keep to the schedule of one session per week. The communication link was sometimes poor. The business owner's skills were very basic so he was only able to understand more advance concepts like strategy only after a few sessions.

1.Telecommunication- Telephonic connection would be below par all the day except between 10-12 Ugandan time. For me it was difficult to communicate with Grow Business in that period on phone, so I had the business install Skype and communicated with them on Skype. 2.Geographical and Time zone separation-It was bit difficult to coordinate with the Business but I scheduled my calls to the Grow Business during my lunch time, which would be 10am for the Grow business in Uganda.

The biggest challenge faced was sticking to the 12 week timetable, which we did not manage to do. The project was partly around better record keeping and it can take a bit of time before the data is collected. It was also difficult to stick to a regular phone call given that the Grow Consultant travels quite a bit and the Grow Business owner has been working very hard at his day job (and got a promotion), which left him less time to prepare for sessions. Other challenges faced were around the quality of the phone lines was pretty mixed, and the time zone as somehow the best time for the Grow Consultant always seemed to coincide with a meal time in Uganda, or the best time for the Grow Business was very early in the morning on a weekend UK time!

- At times the feedback was taking long. - We wanted to move more faster. - Communicating to someone you have not seen. However, on the delay in feed back we found out that we needed to check the internet more often and when we did this we moved faster.

The Grow Business often experiences hardship in getting new clients as there are significant barriers to entry for smaller firms in the Ugandan economy. These challenges can be overcome through constant marketing and publicity for these businesses. There is a general lack of understanding and access to internet resources. Again, website services and the like are prohibitively expensive. The Grow Consultant was able to bypass expensive local internet resources and build up an international website for the Grow business through a hosting firm based in the US.

Communication barriers basically through phone calls due to the poor net work system. Most of the communication has been done through email which has worked for us. Lack of monitoring by the Grow Consultant especially coming on ground. Constant communication has helped to bridge the gap. Limited time with the Grow Consultant. The Grow Consultant has allocated more time despite her busy schedule.

Major challenges included identifying the issues the business was facing from a distance, along with the current state of the business and where it derived its earning. Taking clear and coherent steps to explain and demonstrate where the consulting was leading enabled me to establish trust with the Grow business, so that the business opened up and shared sufficient information to understand how I could help them.

1) First the production costs of chillies are so high, more so harvesting it is labour intensive , what we decided with Grow consultant is to involve out-growers who will be trained and help to cultivate with the tractor to be acquired for bigger volume of chillies. 2) We have decided to have a central collecting center, to enable as monitor the quality standards, there will be need for an ideal storage facility.

Initially, there was a great need to establish a form of reliable communication and keep regular contact. I used my mobile phone to communicate initially and my Grow business also used her mobile phone to call me. Later, to cut costs and as we had established a measure of rapport between us, communication was shifted to email, which is easily accessible to me, and to my Grow business on her mobile phone. We also used the Grow office for some communication. Understanding the circumstances and environment of my Grow business another challenge that I overcame with lots of reading on Uganda. Later, implementing some of the ideas that we agreed upon has been a challenge which we will keep working on as time goes by, long after the official Grow consulting match period.

1. Managing the tight scheduling of the sessions.I think the 12sessions should be allowed flexibility to be able to track results during the advisory period(with our grow consultant we were able to agree on flexible schedules).Sometimes we set targets and we may not meet them within the weekly schedules because of the nature of business or environment here.

First, the overall experience was very positive with enthusiastic participation by the Grow business. This reduced the challenges. One challenge faced was the unknown market for such services in Uganda. The Grow consultants addressed this issue by performing a SWOT analysis, as well as applying our own in-country experience to frame and focus the offering. Another challenge was the introduction of a third party into the business plan, an international consultant looking to participate with the Grow business. The Grow consultants assisted the Grow business in the negotiations with the outside consultant that produced a mutually advantageous relationship that should allow the Grow business to implement their business plan.

- Poor call quality to client: used email for than calls. Provided detailed requests to client. The client then provided detailed information in return. - Difficulties in providing remote help to an established business: From my understanding the business is one of the larger companies that Grow has helped. It is difficult to understand all the key issues and local sensitivities from London, especially as the company is already in operation. Whilst this remains an issue, we tried to get as much financial information as possible from the company. This led to a longer advice period than for the average Grow company as the information was not always readily available.

Still connection problems. Solution: Different businesses will require different time frames, therefore time and ammount of sessions should be flexible depanding on complexity of discussed issues. One business will need very few sessions while another might need ongoing help. The ammount of sessions should be defined after consultant has a chance to know the business better. There is no point to restrain sessions to few if the ojectives are not going to be met within two months and to be obliged to continue, when all matters have been already resolved.

Aligning calendars sometimes meant that the project lost momenturm - continued throughout the project Connectivity issues - continued until the final session, but was generally ok To get a true sense of feedback from my contact.

THERE WERE TWO MAJOR CHALLENGES THAT I EXPERIENCED; ONE BEING, ACQUISITION OF CAPITAL AND SECONDLY GETTING AN APROPRIATE VENUE FOR MY BUSINESS. how was i able to overcome these; For the case of capital, i got a small job from which i was able to save some little money for the start up capital. For the venue, i took my time , i didnt rush in to it, but as i looked for it slowly with the help of other friends, i was able to get this current place am operating in, which is fairly good for the start of my business.

AM A FIELD MAN WHO WANTS A LOT OF RESULT ORIENTED PERSONNEL AND YET MY MAJOR OPERATIONS ARE IN THE RURAL AREAS 90KM AWAY FROM MY PACK HOUSE IN KAMPALA. I WAS THEREFORE IN MOST CASES ON THE MOVE AND CONNECTIVITY WAS ALWAYS A PROBLEM AND AT THE SAME TIME I DIDN'T WANT TO STOP FOR LONG DISCUSSING WITH MY CONSULTANT. I THINK HE MUST HAVE FOUND HARD TIME CONSULTING WITH ME. I FOUND HIM TOLERANT. LONG TELEPHONE CALLS. A LOT OF TECHNICAL QUESTIONS WHICH I THINK I ABLY ANSWERED

Connectivity was an issue, but we solved it by doing everything my email and word documents. Figuring out his key problems to growth was another issue. We solved that by having him list all issues that he had come across and their likley causes.

As has been well documneted, telephone connections were very poor. Combined with language/accent issues this made the calls quite difficult. Overcame this by scheduling mutually convenient times for the calls and also ensuring that I could take the call in a quiet location. For my business, probably the main challenge was that the business was so undeveloped that the scope of advice to offer was almost too broad. The issues that needed addressing as a priority were very generic business administration issues. That said, I feel that we were still able to progress and discuss some more complex issues as marketing strategy options and financing requirements.

Expectation management/objective setting - I may have given my business a slightly inflated expectation of what I could do for it in such a limited amount of time. I tried to impress upon my business that the process is a dialogue and that by sharing ideas we could make progress but I am not sure this was successful. Time management - I think both I and my business underestimated the amount of time required by the Grow process. The more complex the business the more complex and time consuming the analysis required to develop a meaningful understanding of it. In addition the business itself only had limited amount of time to devote to Grow, as they were busy with the job of actually managing day to day operations. This is connected to the issue above and I tried to address this by managing expectations. Expertise - the business was relatively sophisticated in terms of financial planning and management meaning that my ability to add value was relatively limited

1.connectivity problem 2.costs 3.time frame For connectivity, i gave up using phone calls and resorted to using e-mails only. For the costs, i used second generation wood to make the racks, but for the chicken mesh, i had no way out but to bear the costs. 3. For the limited time frame, i had to extend working hours so as to accomplish the assignment.

-poor phone network. Addressed by rescheduling calls to time when network was not busy/ using landline when possible. -convincing business owner of value of Grow at outset of the scheme. His enthusiasm greatly improved as he started to see the results. -extracting data for modelling purelly over the phone, would have been easier/ more confident of accuracy/ if we had been able to do it by email.
