In short, we identified ways to increase revenues short-term, reduce the cost of business, and identify ways to expand the business into related by different activities for long-term growth. |

Grow has helped me develop an accounting system for my business. The system has helped me very much to cut on my costs. I can monitor the areas of the business where i am spending most of the money. This was not possible before I started working with my Grow Consultant. My finances and those of the business were being run from my pocket and this was costing me a lot of profit. My Grow Consultant helped me run the two differently and understand the importance of financial discipline in retail business. She has given me practical knowledge that i now apply every day in my business. |

I think I helped the Grow business to understand and document the cost structure in an easy to use forecast. This will enable the business to monitor its revenue and costs for each product stream and to estliblish a method of evaluating which areas generate the most profits. Hopefully the Grow Business can use the tools i set up for it to continue this analysis and reduce costs after the programme has finished. |

Challenged the busienss owner to think about aspects of his project he hadn't considered. Broadly this covered the following:
Discussion of controls around coffee production throughout the lifecycle and possible procedures and processes.
Discussion of marketing strategy and identification of new buyers.
Challenge of fixed cost in budget.
Discussion of need to be able to identify a break-even sales price.
Discussed need to prepare suite of marketing materials.
The sessions provided the business owner with an opportunity to look at his business from a different perspective and encourage him to find new solutions to some of the problems he faced around marketing and his business plan. |

The GROW Business I worked with was most interested in my marketing experience and expertise, but I believe my value as a consultant was more about providing the business owner with some structure, some time set aside for planning, feedback from an experienced business person and accountability to the plan. The GROW business owner is a very smart, talented and hard working person that simply needed a coach to help him prioritize his business.I hope I was able to offer him that so he can proceed to grow his business deliberately, thoughtfully and with clarity of direction and purpose. |

Grow business had challenged related to identifying target customer segment and most beneficial technologies to be harnessed. When I started working on the case, I felt given all the challenges, Grow business stood to gain most by focusing on communication, entertainment and education and targeting student customer segment. Grow business saw the point in my recommendation and agreed to focus its energy on the identified customer and market segments. Due to ongoing infrastructure problems, Grow business couldn't fully implement the suggestions but could clearly see the market opportunity. |

The Grow Business faced problems around poor financial management, high costs and low brand awareness. It was decided that improving the financial management would be the best area to focus on as that then provides a foundation to improve cost management. The Grow Business has now started to keep records and track the monthly sales developments. The Grow Business now has a much better understanding of the profitability of the business and can use tools such as costs on a per kg basis to quickly analyse the impact of changes in costs on margins. Around 10% of revenues currently go uncollected, so this has been indenfitied as a key area where the profitability of the Grow Business can be improved. In addition, fixed and variable costs and economies of scale were discussed as a possible way to increase margins. As the project progressed, it also became clear that another challenge was the Grow Business owner's time constraints, and so the cost-benefit of hiring a manager to help run the business was also examined. It was only possible to analyse what kind of sales uplift and cost improvement the manager would have to generate to cover his salary because of the earlier work to establish the cost structure of the Grow Business. |

My Grow consultant helped me in so many ways:
1) Exposed me to modern chillies drying methods from other areas
Like Korea.
2) Through my Grow consultant we developed the need for a tractor which we are trying to source.
3) Ever since the most labour intensive part in chillies production is harvesting, my Grow consultant was able to identify a harvesting machine for unfortunately it was not a suitable one for the type of chillies I am growing. but as research is going on there can be a possibility of manufacturing one with time.
4) My Grow consultant will be able to introduce to me new ideas of trading.
5) With sufficient production with good quality, I will be able to compete in the world market. |

The Grow Business is a company primarily focused on the growing, harvesting, and exporting of Ugandan bird's eye chilies. Due to the limited resources that the company's manager Simon Isudo has regarding the technology and methodology of growing and harvesting chilies, it was difficult for him to even find out if there are better ways for production. I spent the majority of my time with the business in looking for ways to finance a purchase of a tractor to cultivate the land. Also, Simon mentioned that the most frustrating part of being a chili farmer is that the harvesting procedure is extremely labor intensive. Because there is a lack of proper credit lending in Uganda, we decided that the business will be able to obtain a tractor by saving up for the full amount of the tractor's cost (approx. 4000~5000 british pounds) or to see if we can raise any charitable funds that would enable the business and other farmers in Uganda to purchase a tractor. We are currently pursuing the second option, and this will be our primary focus for my current session. Also, I did internet research and put in phone calls to numerous agricultural equipment manufacturers in Europe and in Asia to see if the business can purchase a chili harvesting machine, if one even exists. I also talked to many farmers in Asia, who grow a different type of chili on a much bigger scale than the company. The result was that we found a chili harvesting machine, but it was not appropriate for harvesting Ugandan Bird's eye chili (less than 2cm long) because the machine was designed to harvest chilies that are approx. 15 ~ 20cm in length. Disappointed, I reached out directly to the manufacturer of this machine to see if we can modify the specs of the machine to accommodate chilies that are only 2cm long. I did this by suggesting that the machine's cutting blade be replaced by a much smaller and delicate blade. The manufacturer said that this could be done, however, despite having a lot of incentive to modify and sell the machine, the manufacturer thoughtfully suggested that this will not give us the results the business wants because the chilies would be damaged nonetheless in the harvesting process. Unrelenting, I reached out to several major chili farmers to see how they deal with the harvesting. To my surprise, I found out that the harvesting chilies manually is an accepted method, and producers rather focused on other components to producing such as optimizing the soil, chili drying techniques, etc. I communicated this to the business and after focusing on getting funding for a tractor, we would transition into these aspects of chili production. |

I think it is very important for the consultant to take his/her time to understand the business and needs/challenges. I think it would be helpful if the Grow scheme to provide a few bullet points regarding the business needs before a consultant is assigned to a project. The reason for this is to see the viability / time horizon of the project and to also expedite the process of the consultant becoming familiar of exactly what he/she is expected to do. |

The Grow Consultant engaged the business worker into discussion to gather information and understand the operations of the Grow business, its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT ANALYSIS) as well as its challenges. HOW: The Grow Consultant analyzed the business and drafted a report highlighting areas of improvement such as working capital as well as cost effectiveness. ie; focusing on few product lines, direct connections with suppliers of raw materials and automation of plant equipment. |

As it was a start up business our objectives were slightly different. We managed to define the business, which would have greater probability of success; we defined sources for most efficient financing, we discussed ideas to gain competitive advantage and also established best ways to quickly generate cash flow for financing further projects. |

Grow helped me by giving me advice on how to overcome some of the business problems. I was advised to use drying racks (especially during rain seasons) rather the patio drying i was using.
I was also advised to buy sub-par harvests at a discounted rate and always keep quality as first priority. |

-Conducted strategic analysis of business, that identified six different opportunities to address weaknesses, threats and exploit strengths.
-Financially modelled the opportunities in excel using the business owners assumptions and evaluated them using net present value analysis.
-Chose one option (start exporting product)as it had a significantly higher NPV than the others and has relatively low upfront capex requirements. This option is now being implemented by the business owner.
-Demonstrated to business owner the value in modelling business decisions in excel. Previously the business conducted financial planning on paper.
-Business owner has now requested two further Grow assignments: Firstly for a marketing consultant to help him with his marketing strategy to start exporting. Secondly a financial consultant to teach him how to model in excel himself so that he can use this tool for business decision making in the future. |
