What do I need to become a Grow consultant?

Grow's consultants are experienced business professionals, based anywhere in the world with access to international telephone calls and the internet. To ensure our businesses receive only the highest quality of advice we require our consultants to have the following experience:

A formal business qualification (E.G. Chartered Accountant or MBA), or

A manager or graduate trainee in a blue chip company, or

Five years relevant industry (SME) experience, or

A professional management consultant, or

A professional investor in emerging markets, or

A development professional with appropriate experience. The drive and enthusiasm to commit to the twelve session program.

What type of input are businesses looking for?

The advice required by businesses varies and we need people with all types of business skills. Businesses request what type of advice they need and our on-the-ground manager, Violet, matches them to the most appropriate consultant. Often, if the business is smaller or the challenge is relatively simple then general business experience, whatever your background, can add a lot of value.

Am I going to be able to provide useful advice when I’m not there in person and I’m not familiar with the local environment?

Building a relationship is key to the success of all projects. We recommend that all consultants spend a period of 3-5 weeks (stage 1) getting to know the business and environment. After this, you should work closely with your business contact for the rest of the consultancy period (stage 2) to plan what solution will work best in their market. The experience and advice that you are able to provide is valuable; the key is working together to understand how best apply it to their situation. You will find that businesses are generally very good at knowing what will work and won’t work in the local context. We estimate the time commitment to be a 1 hour phone call and up to 2 hours preparation time on a weekly basis over three to four months.
